Beat the Heat: 10 Ways to Keep Your Dog Safe and Happy All Summer Long
Summer is the season of sunshine, long walks, and outdoor adventures with your four-legged best friend. But with rising temperatures and more time spent outside, it’s also a time when dogs are at greater risk for heat-related issues. As groomers and fellow dog lovers, we care deeply about helping you keep your pup safe, cool, and comfortable all season long.
Here are ten tips every dog parent should know to help their pup enjoy summer safely.
1. Prioritize Hydration
Always keep fresh, cool water available at home and on the go. Dogs can dehydrate quickly in warm weather, especially during exercise. Bring a portable bowl and extra water when heading out for walks, hikes, or park visits.
2. Limit Activity During Peak Heat
Avoid walks or intense play between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when temperatures are highest. Early morning or evening outings are safer and more comfortable for your dog.
3. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke
Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or collapse can be signs of heatstroke. If you notice any of these symptoms, move your dog to a cool area immediately and contact your vet.
4. Never Leave Dogs in Parked Cars
Even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can rise dangerously in minutes. Leaving a dog in a parked car during summer is never safe, even for a short period.
5. Protect Their Paws
Asphalt, sand, and concrete can become scorching hot and burn sensitive paw pads. Before heading out, test the pavement with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog. Walk on grass or use paw balm for added protection.
6. Offer Shade and Rest Breaks
When outside, give your dog access to shaded areas and encourage short breaks. A cooling mat or damp towel can also help regulate body temperature during downtime.
7. Use Dog-Safe Sunscreen
Dogs with light-colored or thin coats are prone to sunburn, especially on noses, ears, and bellies. Apply a pet-safe sunscreen if you’ll be outside for extended periods.
8. Keep Their Coat Summer-Ready
A clean, well-brushed coat helps air flow properly and keeps your dog cooler. While it’s tempting to shave a long-haired dog, doing so can actually make them more vulnerable to sunburn and overheating. Our grooming team can help with safe summer trims and de-shedding treatments tailored to your dog’s breed.
9. Be Mindful Around Water
Swimming is a great way for dogs to cool down, but not all dogs are natural swimmers. Supervise water play closely and rinse off after swimming to prevent skin irritation from chlorine or saltwater.
10. Stay Up to Date on Preventative Care
Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes thrive in summer and can cause skin irritation or transmit disease. Ask your vet about flea and tick prevention, and make sure your dog’s grooming schedule supports early detection of any bites, bumps, or skin changes.
A Reminder from Our Team
These tips are intended for general guidance and should not replace veterinary care. If your dog shows signs of heat exhaustion or any concerning symptoms, please seek prompt advice from your veterinarian.
